University of Iowa Health Care has announced it will delay construction of a new inpatient tower, citing cuts in federal funding.

The Daily Iowan reports the tower project, which is billed as expanding space for UIHC’s most complex patients who require specialty care, is still in its early stages, with a series of enabling projects currently in the works to begin construction on the new tower. The tower is projected to cost over $2 billion.

A news release from UIHC Thursday said the project will now continue on a new timeline as they work with the Iowa Board of Regents to reevaluate its facilities master plan.

The federal government has announced a $1 trillion cut in federal health care spending, which the Congressional Budget Office predicts will affect Iowa with about $9.5 billion in reductions.

UIHC says they will continue moving forward on some of the enabling projects.
