Iowa US Senator Chuck Grassley says he intends to question Health and Human Services Director Robert F Kennedy Jr about the shakeup at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Kennedy is scheduled to testify before the Senate Finance Committee, of which Grassley is a member, this Thursday.
The Des Moines Register says his appearance comes shortly after the White House fired CDC Director Susan Monarez last week amid disagreements with Kennedy. Other top CDC officials also announced their resignations the same day in protest of Kennedy’s leadership, including his direction on vaccines.
Speaking at an event in Indianola on Friday, Grassley said he doesn’t think it’s fair to categorize RFK Jr as anti-vaccine, but more information is needed to see what direction he’s heading. Grassley said he wants scientists and public health officials to be making decisions on vaccines, not politicians.
Attorneys for Director Monarez say she was targeted by Kennedy because she refused to rubber-stamp his unscientific directives and fire dedicated health experts. They are considering legal action to challenge her termination.
