An Iowa City man was arrested after allegedly taking an e-bike from the Iowa City Public Library.

According to the arrest report, a woman parked her bike in the bike rack outside the Library the afternoon of August 25th and went inside for several minutes. When she returned, the bike, valued at approximately $2300, was gone.

Surveillance video allegedly showed 32-year-old Gregory Echols of 501 Southgate taking the bike and riding away.  Echols was located approximately 11 hours later with the bike near the intersection of Boyrum Street and Olympic Court.  When confronted, Echols reportedly told police that the bike had been given to him by some acquaintances.

Echols was charged with 2nd degree theft, a Class D felony punishable by up to 5 years in prison if convicted.
