An Iowa City man was charged with OWI after allegedly falling asleep at an intersection.
Officers were called to the area of Gilbert Street and Highway 6 Sunday morning at approximately 10:51 on reports of a person who appeared to be passed out in his vehicle. They located 19-year-old Samuel Cohrs of Haywood Drive, allegedly passed out in the driver’s seat of a Buick Verano.
Police were able to wake Cohrs up and he was ordered out of the vehicle to be checked out by medical personnel. He reportedly refused to get out of his vehicle and tried to close the driver’s side door on officers. He was told to get out of the vehicle numerous times, and attempts to pull him out were reportedly met with resistance. He was finally forced out of the vehicle and placed under arrest.
Cohrs reportedly showed signs of intoxication including bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech, unsteady balance while walking, and the odor of ingested alcohol. He allegedly admitted to having a large shot of tequila after being read his rights. After showing several signs of impairment on field testing, Cohrs agreed to a Datamaster test, which showed his breath-alcohol level at .162 percent.
He was charged with OWI first offense and Interference with Official Acts and faces up to 13 months in jail if convicted on both counts.
