An Iowa City woman was taken into custody early Monday after an alleged assault on another woman at a downtown restaurant.

According to the police report, 19-year-old Shyla Small of Ginter Avenue and at least two of her friends confronted the victim at Panchero’s on South Clinton Street at approximately 1:55am and were engaged in a verbal argument about an ongoing feud.  After a brief separation, Small approached the victim again and allegedly punched her in the face, leaving a bleeding cut on the inside of her mouth.

Police located Small outside the Deadwood bar on Dubuque Street shortly after 2:30am.  Officers reportedly noticed that she was stumbling while she was walking and showed signs of impairment including bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech and a strong odor of ingested alcohol.  She allegedly admitted to punching the other woman in the face.

Small initially provided police with a false last name and false date of birth. She was advised that she was under arrest when she started to pull away from officers.  Small refused to stop despite being told to do so, and allegedly yelled “no” several times.

Officers were able to subdue Small and take her into custody.  A post-arrest PBT showed her breath-alcohol level at .187 percent.  At the jail, she provided her real last name and full first name.

Small was charged with Assault causing Bodily Injury, Public Intoxication, providing False ID Information, and Interference with Official Acts.  If convicted on all counts, she could be sentenced to up to 15 months in jail.
