Firefighters are dispelling rumors of recent activity by Immigration and Customs Enforcement at West Liberty Middle School.

The rumors began Wednesday morning on social media after various law enforcement vehicles were seen responding to the school. But a news release from West Liberty Fire and Ambulance says first responders were called to the school just before 9:45 a.m. for an automatic fire alarm. The school was evacuated, and a sweep by arriving firefighters turned up no fire. Further investigation revealed the alarm had been set off by a fault in a detector head.

School officials were told to contact the alarm company, and emergency crews left the scene without incident. West Liberty Fire and Ambulance say they were unaware of any ICE activity while they were at the school and cannot and will not assist ICE in any future enforcement or operations.
