More than 250 clergy, elected officials, and other supporters defied an ICE checkpoint Tuesday to accompany four immigrant families to their scheduled check-ins at the Cedar Rapids ICE office.
According to a release from the advocacy group Escucha Mi Voz, the federal checkpoint included eight masked Homeland Security Police officers armed with non-lethal weapons, police tape, and squad car blockades, but community members refused to be intimidated.
The group escorted all four families safely through the barricades. Each family was granted another year before their next check-in, a reprieve that allows them to remain together in their communities.
Organizers also documented three detentions during the morning. Volunteers met with the impacted families and began mobilizing jail solidarity support.
Additional accompaniment actions are scheduled in Cedar Rapids this morning, in addition to September 10th and 16th. Organizers say they will continue showing up to support immigrants at their check-ins until ICE dismantles its checkpoints and families can live free from fear of detention and deportation.
