The University of Iowa issued its first crime alert Monday regarding a sexual assault on campus.
The Gazette reports the sexual assault occurred during the early morning hours Monday in a west side residence hall. The alleged perpetrator was an acquaintance of the victim, according to the alert.
Last school year, the University of Iowa issued 8 sexual assault-related crime alerts. Five were reported in residence halls.
The University of Iowa’s most recent crime report showed reports of rape jumped from 13 in 2022 to 56 in 2023, while the number of fondling reports doubled from 20 to 40. Officials pointed out that 43 of the 96 combined incidents involved a single individual over multiple years but only reported that year.
