The numbers aren’t in yet, but the incoming class of freshmen at the University of Iowa has caused the school to make adjustments to accomodate housing requests.
The Daily Iowan reports a number of lounges in Mayflower and Catlett residence halls have been converted into six-person rooms to accommodate the large number of students who want to live on campus.
UI Public relations manager Steve Schmadeke told the student newspaper that the last time this happened was 2019, when the converted residence hall rooms were a temporary fix until more space was freed up. This year, he says the rooms are permanent.
The University has also reopened Parklawn Residence Hall to free up more rooms.
Catlett is the newest of the UI’s residence halls, opening on the east side of campus in 2017. Mayflower was put up for commercial sale in recent years, but that plan has been temporarily scrapped. The University hopes to build new student housing closer to campus as part of their facilities master plan.
Enrollment numbers are due to be released next week.
