A Coralville man is accused of eluding a Johnson County Sheriff’s deputy following a Friday night traffic stop.
Arrest records indicate the deputy pulled over a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 on southbound Highway 218 near the Highway 1 exit just after 8:45 p.m. The driver, identified as 57-year-old William Hawbaker of the Western Hills Estates manufactured housing community, was reportedly committing multiple lane violations and was missing a light for his rear license plate.
Hawbaker reportedly drove away when a police K9 alerted on his vehicle. He was eventually stopped, and a search of his truck reportedly turned up methamphetamine and two glass pipes.
Hawbaker is now charged with Eluding, Possession of a Controlled Substance – 3rd or Subsequent Offense, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Failure to Provide Proof of Financial Liability, and Improper Registration Plate Lamp. If convicted on all counts, he faces a maximum of over six years in prison.
