An Iowa City woman was charged with two counts of assault on a police officer last month.
The incident occurred on the evening of August 30th at the West Benton Street residence of 55-year-old Sondra Lonngren. According to police, she was seated on a bed and pushed an officer with both of her hands on the officer’s chest, backing the officer into a dresser.
Lonngren was placed into handcuffs and allegedly resisted being taken down stairs. An officer reportedly noticed that she was close to slipping her cuffs and grabbed her. As the officer was unlocking the handcuffs to tighten them, Lonngren kicked her right leg backwards into the officer’s knee. The officer reported pain from having the knee being over-extended.
Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations is an Aggravated misdemeanor; Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations causing Bodily Injury is a Class D Felony. If convicted on both counts, Lonngren could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison.
She was released on her own recognizance the following Monday and will be arraigned at a later date.
