This weekend is Homecoming for Highland High School, but anticipation for this Friday night’s scheduled game against New London has turned to confusion and disappointment as the rest of the football season is now in doubt, including the cancellation of Friday night’s contest.

Huskies head coach Cory Quail resigned earlier this week, posting on Facebook Wednesday night that he wanted to cancel the rest of the season for safety reasons. Highland lost its first two games of 2025 by a combined score of 53-7. But the Huskies also racked up a number of injuries, leaving the team with just over a dozen healthy players.

Highland district officials won’t go as far as Quail’s suggestion to cancel the rest of the season, but they have called for a two-week pause to see if the team can get healthy in time for the scheduled September 26th game at Danville. The district is currently seeking an interim head coach.

Lone Tree was already forced to cancel its 2025 varsity season due to low participation numbers.
