An Iowa City man was taken into custody early Friday after a traffic stop for an expired registration led to an OWI and other charges.
Police stopped 47-year-old Paul Hagerman of South Dubuque Street on the 2200 block of Old Highway 218 at 2am for the infraction. His driving status came up as suspended as well. Upon contact, Hagerman had multiple open containers of alcohol in his vehicle. He allegedly admitted to drinking and had the odor of ingested alcohol.
Police described Hagerman as sweaty with constricted pupils.
A search turned up a methamphetamine pipe, a handgun and multiple rounds of ammunition within arm’s reach. Hagerman was reportedly wearing an empty holster at the time of the stop.
He allegedly showed measurable impairment on field sobriety tests. A PBT showed his breath-alcohol level less than the legal limit, and Hagerman refused Datamaster testing and a request for a urine sample.
He was charged with OWI first offense, Person Ineligible to carry Dangerous Weapons, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and an open container violation. If convicted on all counts, Hagerman could be sentenced to up to 25 months in jail.
