The Eastern Iowa Airport Commission is recommending against a natural gas plant being built near the facility.

KCRG TV-9 reports Alliant Energy has been seeking to build the new plant along 76th Avenue near Fairfax, placing it near the airport’s main runway.

A report on the potential effects of the new plant was released by airport officials on Monday. It says the plant defies zoning laws that cap structure height at 45 feet. The proposed Alliant facility would have smokestacks reaching as high as 250 feet. The report finds the smokestacks’ proximity to the runway could jeopardize federal funding for the airport, and the fumes they would exude might interfere with nearby air traffic patterns.

Alliant has said it is open to finding alternative sites for the plant.
