The University of Iowa Street Hawk food truck is being discontinued, but campus food truck connoisseurs will have other choices going forward.
The Daily Iowan reports there were many reasons behind the decision to discontinue the Street Hawk, including the cost and hassle of maintenance, losing business to other new dining options on and near campus, and working conditions inside the truck being too hot or cold in extreme weather conditions.
Officials told the DI the food truck saw a drop in average customers from 140 in the 2023-24 school year to 113 last academic year.
Since 2017, Street Hawk has been regularly setting up near the Iowa Memorial Union, the courtyard of the Medical Education Research Facility, outside the Pappajohn Biomedical Discovery Building, on T. Anne Cleary Walkway, and between the UI Main Library and the Adler Journalism Building.
The truck began operations to alleviate overcrowding at the Burge Residence Hall dining area…something that is no longer an issue with new dining facilties opening up in nearby Catlett Residence Hall.
Other, privately-owned food trucks have since come to terms with the UI to serve at various locations on campus.
