An Iowa City man has been sentenced to 27 months in federal prison for being a felon in possession of ammunition.

Iowa City Police say that on March 31st of last year Washington took a revolver and two children to the shooting range at the Hawkeye Wildlife Area on Amana Road. Washington allegedly recorded his time there on his cellphone and sent it to friends.

A police search of Washington’s South Dodge Street apartment in May reportedly turned up a receipt for shooting accessories and a .357 Magnum. A search of his phone allegedly turned up photos and video of Washington using the gun as well as messages about shooting the gun, going to the gun range and attending gun shows.

Washington is prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition due to a 2018 conviction for possessing a firearm as a felon.

After completing his term of imprisonment, Washington will be required to serve a three-year term of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.
