In a scene out of a Cheech and Chong movie, marijuana smoke emanating from a van parked in an Iowa City parking ramp has led to drug and weapons charges against multiple individuals.
Iowa City Police say an officer was patrolling the Capitol Street ramp just after 11:45 Friday night when he noticed a van parked on the top floor with marijuana smoke billowing from the cracked windows. Marijuana and two firearms were reportedly located inside.
The driver…19-year-old Jalyn Graham of Esther Court…and a passenger…19-year-old Ivan Bryson of Burns Avenue…were charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance. If convicted, they each a maximum of one year in jail.
Another passenger, Davontae Morris of the Lake Ridge manufactured housing community, was allegedly in possession of a Glock 19 handgun and five pills for which he did not have a prescription. Morris, who was celebrating his 21st birthday Friday night, is charged with Person Ineligible to Carry Dangerous Weapons, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Unlawful Possession of a Prescription drug. He could face up to three years in jail, if convicted.
The owner of the van was identified as 20-year-old Rayquan Brown Of Jessup Circle. While Brown was not present when police arrived, he reportedly walked up to the van as they were searching it and admitted it was his. Police say he also admitted to driving it to the ramp and knowing there was marijuana inside. He’s now charged with Keeping a Vehicle for the Use of Controlled Substances and Possession of a Controlled Substance. If convicted, he faces a maximum of three years behind bars.
