CORALVILLE, Iowa – Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity (IVHFH) will once again welcome the Iowa Women’s Basketball Team onto the build site. On Wednesday, October 1, 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, the student-athletes will trade their basketballs for hard hats and hammers to help construct this year’s Women Build home in honor of Wai Yin Chan and Linda “Digger” Barrow. The home is located at 708 9th Avenue in Coralville. The Iowa Women’s Basketball program has been a loyal Women Build partner for more than a decade. Head Coach Jan Jensen and the whole coaching staff continue to inspire their players to build team spirit through service to the local community.
Women Build honoree, Linda “Digger” Barrow, recently reflected on the build day with the basketball team, “We were putting the second-story rafters on the house; we needed tall, strong individuals. So, the basketball team shows up. We got Jan, we got Randi, we’ve got Ava, we’ve got Addi, and we’ve got the Bulldog, Syd. And they are carrying twenty-something-foot racks of floor joists across the alley, up the hill, and up on the first floor. And if we hadn’t had them, I don’t know what we would have done. None of us could do it.”
This collaboration brings IVHFH closer to handing the keys to another deserving Habitat family. Once complete, the home will provide stability and opportunity for a family of six who have long dreamed of having a safe and affordable place to live. Mohamed, along with his wife Shaza and four children say, “Thank you so much. We appreciate all the help you’ve done for us.”
