Linn-Mar Community School District says they will improve communications with parents after student-produced announcements at the High School recognized Bisexual Plus Awareness Week.

KCJJ previously reported that US Representative Ashley Hinson sent a letter to US Education Secretary Linda McMahon calling for a federal investigation into the matter, saying “Our schools should be educating students, not indoctrinating them.” The announcements focused on messages to help stop biphobia.

The Gazette reports in a statement Monday, the district acknowledged concerns and pledged to “tighten internal protocols to ensure parents are appropriately informed in advance” about potentially sensitive topics. They said the changes hope to support a respectful dialogue with parents while supporting students and staff in a safe and inclusive environment.

A spokesperson for Hinson said the district’s steps don’t go far enough and reflect a broader pattern of sidelining parents.

Keenan Crow, from the LGBTQ advocacy group One Iowa, blasted Hinson’s call for a federal investigation, saying the announcements are protected by student expression under state and federal law, adding there was nothing explicit or illegal about the announcements.
