A Coralville man was arrested after an alleged attempted bike theft overnight Tuesday.
The incident occurred just before 3:30am outside Hillcrest Residence Hall. According to police, 35-year-old Nicholas Blaszczyk of the Western Hills Mobile Estates was observed on camera trying to cut a bike lock. He allegedly hid in the bushes when officers arrived on scene. They found that the cable on the bike had been almost cut through.
Cutters were located in the grass near the bike rack.
Police located Blaszczyk, who allegedly admitted to trying to steal the bike and using the cutting tool. He also reportedly admitted that he got to Hillcrest on a bike he had stolen from a different Hillcrest bike rack. The stolen bike is valued at approximately $600.
Blaszyzyk was charged with 4th degree Theft, Possession of Burglar’s tools, and 4th degree criminal mischief. If convicted on all counts, he could be convicted to a maximum of 37 months in prison.
