Users of a popular parking app used in Iowa City and on the University of Iowa campus are being targeted by scammers.
An unknown number of ParkMobile users received texts from an international number from the Philippines on Friday that stated the recipient had outstanding parking fees that needed to be paid that day. It warns that if the user doesn’t pay immediately, they would have their license suspended on Saturday, their outstanding balance would be transferred to a collection agency with a 35% service fee, the company would initiate legal proceedings against the recipient, the recipient would be added “to the list of dishonest individuals, permanently suspending service”, and that the violation would be reported to the Department of Motor Vehicles…an agency that does not exist in Iowa.
The text provides a link that the user is supposed to use to make the payment.
Recipients are urged to ignore the text and not to open the link.
