An Iowa City man who allegedly fired a weapon on the southeast side four years ago has been taken into custody.

According to the initial report, 33-year-old Devon Freeman of Cross Park Avenue fired four rounds near the intersection of Broadway and Apple Court the afternoon of April 26th 2021.  He reportedly left his cellphone on scene next to four spent cartridges and one live round. Video footage allegedly caught Freeman fleeing the scene. The shooting reportedly stemmed from a verbal altercation Freeman had at a gas station earlier.

The weapon used in the shooting was located in a vehicle Freeman was driving on a later date.  The spent shell casings matched test fired casings from the recovered firearm.

Iowa City Police executed a search warrant on Freeman’s apartment June 23rd of that year, and reportedly found 3 ½ grams of marijuana.

Freeman remained at large after missing a Case Management Conference in November 2021. He was located and booked into the Johnson County Jail Friday evening.  He faces charges including Dominion or Control of a Firearm by a Felon, Keeping Premises for controlled Substances, and Marijuana possession 2nd offense.  If convicted on all counts, he could face up to eight years in prison.
