An Iowa City man with a long criminal theft history was taken into custody on a warrant stemming from an incident at Town and Campus Apartments.

Police say 33-year-old Gregory Echols of 501 Southgate was at the complex the morning of October 3rd . The resident woke up to discover that several pairs of shoes and a cellphone was missing and called police.

Later that day, the tenant got a call from someone saying that Echols was selling their shoes.  The victim was able to recover several pairs of shoes from him.

Surveillance video allegedly showed Echols entering the apartment at 6, 6:01 and 6:08 am.  He reportedly left the apartment with the victim’s backpack and shoes in hand on the second and third occasions.

A warrant for Echols’ arrest was issued on Monday, and he was in court the next day. He was charged with 2nd degree burglary and could be sentenced to up to ten years in prison if convicted.

Echols faces an additional charge of 2nd degree burglary from an incident September 26th.
