Cedar Rapids Fire and Police responded to a residential fire Thursday night.
According to a release from the city, responders were called to the 300 block of 16th St NE at approximately 6:32p.m. First-arriving police officers found one occupant trapped on the porch roof and were able to rescue that person with the use of a nearby ladder. Another occupant was able to escape.
The fire was extinguished and the under-control call came at approximately 6:50pm.
Both occupants were taken to a local hospital for medical evaluation and care.
At least two cats are known to have perished. Several more cats, along with two dogs, were safely evacuated before or were located and reunited with their owner after the fire by an Animal Control Officer from Cedar Rapids Animal Care and Control.
Fire damages were mostly contained to the second floor. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
