The mayor of North Liberty and its city councilors will be getting their first raise in nearly 20 years starting January 1st.

The Press Citizen reports the raises will more than double what the mayor earns and is a fourfold increase for city councilors. The changes are required by Iowa law to be passed and ratified before Election Day. North Liberty held three separate votes, first on Sept. 23, and officially passed and adopted the new guidelines on Tuesday.

Councilors are currently getting $50 per meeting, which averages out to about $1300 per year. Across the state, cities with similar populations pay their councilors a little over $5600 yearly.  Going forward, the North Liberty councilors will be paid $5000 yearly.

Mayors in cities with similar populations receive annual salaries of $12,000. The North Liberty Mayor’s pay will rise to that amount, from about $5000 per year.

Officials are discussing changing city code to provide cost-of-living adjustments so they don’t have to vote themselves another pay raise down the road, but have yet to make an official decision.
