A leader in protecting local residents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement has died after returning from a Papal event in Italy.

The Iowa Catholic Worker announced Friday that Fathér Guillermo Treviño Jr. of West Liberty had died earlier in the day. Treviño fell ill in Rome while attending the Pope’s World Meeting of Popular Movements, His worsening condition went untreated until he was able to return to the United States on Thursday. Treviño’s sister posted to Facebook that her brother died from complications related to his diabetes.

Treviño served as the board president of immigrants’ rights group Escucha Mi Voz Iowa. He led the organization in accompanying local immigrants to their hearings at the federal courthouse in Cedar Rapids and in leading protests when they were arrested by ICE. Treviño was also the chaplain of the third-ranked Regina football team.

Treviño was not the stereotypical Catholic priest, as he enjoyed professional wrestling to the point that he regularly travelled to various television and pay-per-view events, often posing with wrestlers while still wearing his liturgical vestments. He once told KCJJ one of his favorite wrestling photos was taken last year in London when he met then-All Elite Wrestling World Champion, and the promotion’s top heel, MJF (seen below).

Treviño told KCJJ going to pro wrestling events was an excuse to follow his first true love: travel.
