A former Johnson County Executive director is suing the county and its supervisors for what he’s calling wrongful termination.

Guillermo Morales was terminated by the board of supervisors in September of last year by a 3-2 vote after accusations of insubordinate, disrespectful and argumentative behavior against the three supervisors who later cast the deciding votes.

The lawsuit targets the three supervisors who voted to oust Morales, including Rod Sullivan, Lisa-Green Douglass and then-supervisor Royceann Porter. Morales claims the three conspired against him and that he was fired partially due to his Latino heritage. His firing was opposed by the immigrants rights group Escucha Mi Voz Iowa.
Morales is a former member of the campaign staff of supervisor V Fixmer-Oraiz, who along with Jon Green voted against his termination.

Morales said in September of 2024 that he had planned to sue for wrongful termination. He’s seeking a jury trial and compensation for lost wages, emotional distress and reputational damage.
