Statistics from the Iowa Department of Transportation show the state is on pace to have the fewest traffic fatalities in decades.
So far this year there have been 232 traffic fatalities in Iowa, down 22 percent from last year and over 20 percent below the five year average. The DOT also noted an over 40 percent decrease in motorcycle deaths.
Larry Grant, a safety planner with the DOT says that installing more edge line and center line rumble strips have helped, as the top type of fatality is a single vehicle running off the road.
The Iowa State Patrol’s goal this year is to have fewer than 300 traffic fatalities this year; if so, it would be the lowest number since 1935.
