The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services has announced a $1 million donation match among the six food banks in Iowa.

Iowa Capital Dispatch reports the money will be equally divided among Food Bank of Iowa, Food Bank for the Heartland, Food Bank of Siouxland, Northeast Iowa Food Bank, River Bend Food Bank and HACAP.

Gov. Kim Reynolds announced October 30th that funds from DHHS would match monetary donations made to Iowa’s six food banks if the federal government shutdown persisted into November and federal food benefits were not issued.

The shutdown continues, but the state announced this week that partial SNAP benefits will be loaded onto recipients’ cards in the coming days.

Food banks have the ability to purchase food in bulk from suppliers and say they can stretch each dollar further than an individual shopper, which is why food bank officials have stressed the importance of monetary donations.
