A University of Iowa student was arrested this week after allegedly flipping a campus conservative group’s table.
The incident reportedly occurred Wednesday as the UI’s Turning Point USA chapter hosted an event outside the Tippie College of Business advertised as “Cocoa and Conservatives.”
The Daily Iowan reports one of the members was recording when 19-year-old Niko Calhoon grabbed the table edge and tipped it and its contents to the ground.
The video has gone viral on the club’s Instagram page, reaching over 6.2 million views. It also elicited a response from US representative Ashley Hinson, who posted on X, “Disgraceful behavior by a UI student. Intimidation tactics and violent behavior are unacceptable regardless of political party. The student responsible must be held accountable by the university.”
Calhoon was charged with Disorderly Conduct and 3rd degree Harassment. If convicted on both counts, she could be sentenced to up to 60 days in jail. A no-contact order was issued, and a trial is scheduled for March 3rd.
The Press-Citizen reports a week earlier, a warrant was issued after Calhoon allegedly flipped a table during a Young Americans for Freedom event Oct. 27. An arrest warrant was issued on misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct, fifth-degree criminal mischief and third-degree harassment on Nov. 3.
The University of Iowa told the Press-Citizen in a statement that they will investigate the incidents for potential violations of the student code.
