The Iowa City Water Division has begun its annual leak detection survey on the 282 miles of water mains within the City’s distribution system. The work performed by Westrum Leak Detection began on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2025, and is scheduled to be completed within two weeks.
Although much of the work will be performed during the day, Westrum Leak Detection personnel may work at night on the heavy traffic roadways. The Iowa City Police Department will be notified when night work is scheduled.
These survey experts will be listening for any leaks coming from the water mains, fire hydrants or water services in the city.
Work will be starting on the far west side of Iowa City and move east. The surveyor will be operating a brown and white scooter or a dark blue van during this work. He will be using electronic equipment to listen to water mains, fire hydrants, and water services. The survey will take place mainly during the day with some night work in areas of heavily used roadways or strong background noises.
Access to private property may be needed for investigating a service leak, but uniformed City staff will be in attendance on those occasions.
