A Coralville man was arrested Friday night after he was allegedly found to be illegally possessing a handgun.
Officers made a stop on a 2016 Honda HRV near the intersection of Fairview Lane and Sugar Creek in North Liberty at 9:35pm for an expired registration. 28-year-old Brandon GIlliams of Coral Court was a passenger in the vehicle, and a strong odor of marijuana was detected upon contact.
Gilliams was removed from the vehicle so it could be searched. He was patted down, and police allegedly discovered a pink 9mm handgun that GIllams was trying to conceal in his pants. Due to a felony conviction out of Illinois, he is ineligible to carry a firearm. Marijana was also reportedly located on the floorboard of the passenger seat.
Gillams was allegedly intoxicated, with bloodshot watery eyes and slurred speech. A PBT showed his breath-alcohol level at .118 percent.
Gillams was charged with Person Ineligible to Carry Dangerous Weapons, Dominion or Control of a Firearm by a Felon, and Marijuana possession. If convicted on all counts, he could face a prison sentence of up to seven years.
