A North Liberty woman was sentenced last week for killing her former longtime partner, who moved to the Minneapolis area to pursue a career as an underground electronic music club DJ.

KCJJ reported back in 2024 that 34-year-old Margot Lewis crashed a vehicle southeast of Rochester on June 22nd, with the body of 35-year-old Liara Tsai in the backseat.  Police found Lewis seated in a lawn chair in a highway median.

Authorities determined Tsai’s death wasn’t because of the crash, and a check of her Minneapolis residence found signs of violence. Her initial cause of death was listed as due to multiple sharp-force injuries.

Lewis was convicted by a Hennepin County jury on both counts of second-degree murder with intent not premeditated and second-degree murder without intent while committing a felony. Lewis was sentenced to the maximum 40 years in prison on November 18th.

Minnesota Public Radio reports Lewis maintains her innocence and argues faulty evidence was used in her conviction.
