The city of Coralville has amended its guidelines on how it uses its new Flock cameras. The cameras alert law enforcement when a vehicle identified through an Amber or Silver alert is detected. They also save plate numbers and other information to cross reference arrest warrant and missing vehicle databases.
The new guidelines better define when police officers can take action based on data received by the cameras. It also expands sharing with other Johnson County agencies that use the technology, including North Liberty and University of Iowa Police.
Some councilors expressed concern that the cameras store data for 30 days, making it easier for ICE or another outside agency to access the data. But that issue was not addressed by the council’s actions at Tuesday night’s meeting.
Cameras are already in use at Coral Ridge Mall and Lowe’s, with more on the way.
