An area transient with a history of theft convictions was charged again after an attempted theft at an Iowa City grocery store.

According to the arrest report, 49-year-old Carl White was at the Waterfront Drive HyVee Sunday night and attempted to steal just over $70 dollars in merchandise despite being previously trespassed from the location. White allegedly locked himself in the bathroom when contacted by police, and eventually left the store.

A search of the bathroom reportedly found a sweatshirt belonging to White with two board games concealed inside.

He was located by police a few hours after the incident and was taken into custody. A post-arrest search allegedly found a glass pipe with drug residue.

Due to his history of theft convictions, White was charged with 3rd degree Theft and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.  He could be sentenced to up to 25 months in jail if convicted on both counts.
