A homeless man was arrested after allegedly breaking into the home of State Auditor Rob Sand and staying there over Thanksgiving weekend while Sand and his family were out of town.
In a statement to the Des Moines Register, Sand said “My family and I came home from Thanksgiving travels to find an intruder in our house. Our family is safe. The prompt assistance of law enforcement is one more thing for which our family is thankful.”
Arriving officers said the man, identified as 41-year-old Jeffery Moffett of Waterloo, came out of the home and claimed it was his, and was wearing clothing that belonged to a member of the household. Moffett failed to comply with officers and actively fought them. One officer suffered an elbow injury while another had sustained cuts to his hand.
Moffett faces two counts of interference with official acts causing bodily injury, and one count of 2nd degree burglary. He could be sentenced to up to 14 years in prison. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for December 11th.
