Members of the Iowa City Federation of Labor say they’re joining striking Starbucks baristas for an Iowa City rally on Saturday. Both groups are calling on Starbucks to come to a fair contract with its workers, and they pledge to expand a boycott of the company through the holidays if necessary.
Iowa City baristas unanimously voted to unionize over 2.5 years ago, but the employees say the company has since failed to settle a first contract with any of its thousands of union-represented workers across the country. Baristas say the latest national strike comes after six months of Starbucks refusing to offer new proposals to address workers’ proposals for better staffing, higher pay, and settling hundreds of unfair labor practice charges related to company retaliation and union busting.
Saturday’s protest is set for noon outside the Starbucks location on South Clinton Street.
