A Coralville company recently received a loan form the Iowa Economic Development Authority to advance their mission of affordably removing nitrates from water.

The company, Pani Clean, was started 10 years ago by CEO and President Joun Lee, who decided to dedicate his expertise and skills to solve water challenges.

KCRG TV reports the major challenge at the time was the cost of removing nitrates from water, but over the years Pani Clean’s team has created a device that removes nitrates affordably and converts them to ammonia, which can be used as fertilizer or as a clean fuel.

The work has been bolstered by a collaboration with the University of Iowa. The technology is being tested with the Iowa City wastewater treatment plant, and Pani Clean hopes the technology can go global in the future.
