A chain of convenience stores based in Iowa is the latest company that will round cash transactions down to the nearest nickel when customers don’t have exact change.
The Des Moines Register reports Casey’s made the announcement this week. A spokesperson said when necessary, cash transactions will be rounded down to the nearest five cents in favor of the customers.
The last pennies were produced at the US Mint in Philadelphia on November 12th after President Donald Trump told the US Treasury to stop minting pennies due to them costing three times more to make than they’re worth.
The American Banking Association says there are still about 250 billion pennies in circulation, but there have been localized shortages, causing companies like Casey’s to change their business practices.
Wisconsin-based Kwik Trip, known as Kwik Star locally, announced in October they would round cash transactions down to the nearest nickel when customers don’t have exact change.
