An Iowa City man was arrested earlier this week after a traffic stop found him with illegal substances.
According to the police report, 46-year-old Leon Watley of Yewell Street was a passenger in a vehicle stopped near the intersection of Wayne Avenue and Arthur Street on Monday evening. The driver was stopped because police knew they had active warrants for their arrest.
The driver was in possession of a baggie containing a green leafy substance suspected to be marijuana; during a probable cause search of the vehicle, marijuana joints were allegedly located outside the passenger window and on the passenger seat. Additionally, a white substance suspected to be crack cocaine reportedly was found on Watley’s seat.
Officers located a pipe used for smoking narcotics under the passenger seat, and a clear baggie containing suspected marijuana was allegedly located directly behind the passenger seat.
Watley was arrested and charged with a controlled substance violation, marijuana possession, and possession of drug paraphernalia. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to up to 25 months in jail.
