An editorial in the Daily Iowan criticizes the election of Robert Cramer as new President of the Iowa Board of Regents.

Cramer, former chair of the conservative church group The Family Leader, was appointed by Governor Kim Reynolds and approved by the Iowa Senate. He was rejected by the Board of Regents in 2013.

The Family Leader website says, “We support policies that strengthen biblical marriages and oppose anything that undermines God’s design for human sexuality, including fornication, pornography, homosexuality, and transgenderism.”

The editorial says, “The Iowa Board of Regents doesn’t need another walking mouthpiece for the GOP or any mainstream political party, and certainly doesn’t need a businessman who cares only for profit. It needs someone who’s actually prepared to defend diversity and respect, the things that make this campus great, and is prepared to spend to do so. Cramer is not that man.”

With the University of Iowa dropping from 33rd in the ranking of the top national colleges three years ago to out of the top one hundred altogether, Kade Grierson, the opinions columnist who authored the editorial, said, “I fear Cramer will build a bridge with the rest of the Board of Regents, but not one that will bring forth intellectual diversity.”
