Iowa’s Congressional delegation, consisting of Republicans Randy Feenstra, Ashley Hinson, Zach Nunn and Mariannette Miller-Meeks all backed the Republican alternative to the Affordable Care Act instead of voting to extend the ACA subsidies.
The Associated Press reports four centrist Republicans broke with Speaker Mike Johnson and signed onto the Democratic-led petition to force a House vote on extending the subsidies for three years.
The stunning move comes the same day House Republican leaders pushed ahead with their health care bill, introduced by Miller-Meeks, that does not address the soaring monthly premiums that millions of people will soon endure when the tax credits for those who buy insurance through the Affordable Care Act expire at year’s end.
Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart said in a statement, “Mariannette Miller-Meeks managed to create a health care bill that does nothing to deal with the problem right in front of us. Randy Feenstra, Zach Nunn and Ashley Hinson voted for the bill and are ready to leave the 117,000 Iowans whose out-of-pocket health care premiums will double in the dust. This bill is nothing more than a recycled grab-bag of random policies Republicans have been trying to get passed for years because Miller-Meeks, Feenstra, Nunn and Hinson all took an 8-week paid vacation instead of coming up with a real plan to address skyrocketing costs.”
