An Iowa City man faces charges that he assaulted the protected party in a no-contact order outside of the Johnson County Courthouse.
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says 34-year-old Kelvin Ware of Muscatine Avenue was at the courthouse just before 12:15 Thursday afternoon when he learned the female half of a no-contact order against him was also there. Ware exited the courthouse and approached a nearby vehicle containing the male half of the order. Investigators say Ware then exchanged words with the protected party and began recording him. The situation reportedly escalated, and Ware is accused of assaulting the man to the point deputies had to physically intervene. The man in the car suffered multiple abrasions.
Ware is charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury, Disorderly Conduct, and Violation of a Protective Order. If convicted on all counts, he faces a maximum of 13 months in jail.
