A longtime Iowa City hotel has filed for bankruptcy protection.

That’s according to a report in the Corridor Business Journal, which says the Highlander Hotel filed for Chapter 11 on Tuesday. The report indicates the North Dodge Street hotel is seeking to reorganize while continuing its day-to-day operations.

The CBJ says the filing comes two months after a New York-based lender sought foreclosure on loans worth more than $4 million.

The Highlander first opened its doors in 1964 and has been an Iowa City institution ever since.
