An Iowa City man arrested on Friday faces charges stemming from previous incidents this spring.
Police saw 37-year-old Reginald Payne of Sandusky Drive driving on the 1600 block of Burns Avenue despite his vehicle missing a front license plate as required by law. He stopped when the officers activated emergency lights, and an expired registration tag was reportedly observed on the back of Payne’s vehicle.
As the officer approached Payne’s vehicle, he allegedly got out and ran. He failed to obey commands to stop and successfully eluded arrest. The officer returned to the car and reportedly observed the odor of marijuana, which was confirmed by a K9 sweep.
A subsequent search of the vehicle located a wallet with Payne’s ID. The picture on the driver’s license matched the individual who ran from the vehicle.
A check of Payne’s driving record showed his driving status as barred and suspended.
He was charged with Driving while Barred, Interference with Official Acts, and driving while suspended. He could face a sentence of up to 25 months if convicted on the charges.
Payne remained at large until Friday, when officers chased him back to his residence. He crashed his vehicle into his home and ran inside. He faces a multitude of charges for that incident, including assault on police officers, controlled substance violations, weapon violations, and driving while barred.
In total, Payne is looking at a maximum prison sentence of over 45 years.
