Shelter House resident accused of robbing convenience store

A resident of Shelter House is accused of robbing a nearby convenience store.

Iowa City Police were called to a fight in progress near U.S. Cellular on Boyrum Street just after 12:45 Saturday morning. Arriving officers found 30-year-old Lamon Lewis fleeing northbound. He was arrested after a brief foot chase.

Lewis allegedly showed signs of intoxication. Police say they learned Lewis had entered a  nearby convenience store, stole a six-pack of Budweiser and fled without paying. Staff followed Lewis, who allegedly threw the first punch in the ensuing confrontation. The cashier suffered a bloody and swollen nose as a result, as well as cuts to his hands and arm.

Lewis’ breath alcohol level was measured at .227%.

Lewis is charged with 2nd Degree Robbery, Assault Causing Bodily Injury, Interference With Official Acts, and Public Intoxication. If convicted on all counts, he faces a maximum of over 11 years in prison.
