A Cedar Rapids man facing an Iowa City vandalism charge told police he fell through a business window because he got “spooked”.

Iowa City Police say 30-year-old Victor Hughes of Summer Circle NE broke a window at the former Varsity Cleaners location on South Gilbert Street…now home to the Wright House of Fashion and the Iowa City Community Fridge…just after 4:00 Thursday morning. Hughes reportedly told police something “spooked” him and his body had gone through the pane.

Workers inside the building claim they saw Hughes standing next to the broken window immediately after they heard the crash. Hughes had been in the area most of the night.

Damage is estimated at $2,000.

Hughes was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 4:30 Thursday morning and charged with 2nd Degree Criminal Mischief. If convicted, he faces a maximum of five years in prison.
