A chronic shoplifter is back behind bars after another recent slate of thefts.
49-year-old Carl White of the Town & Campus Apartments on Arthur Street was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 5:15 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. White was wanted for three different recent shoplifting incidents.
The first was on the afternoon of December 10th, when White allegedly stole several clothing items from The Salvation Army on Boyrum Street. The second was at the downtown Target on East Washington Street, where White allegedly took $32.41 in merchandise last Tuesday night. White was captured following the third incident Wednesday afternoon, also at the Salvation Army. Iowa City Police say White stole several more items of clothing and swore at staff as he fled. Officers caught up with White near the intersection of Gilbert Street and Kirkwood Avenue, where he was wearing some of the stolen items. A clear glass pipe with burnt residue was allegedly found in his coat pocket.
White, who has multiple previous theft convictions, is now charged with three counts of 3rd Degree Theft and one of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. If convicted on all counts, he faces a maximum of over six years in jail.
