A New Year’s Day accident involving an injury has led to a felony drunk driving charge against an Iowa City man.
Coralville Police say 40-year-old Zachary Hill of Westside Drive was driving a 2024 Ford Escape just after 4:45 Thursday afternoon when he failed to obey a traffic control device at the intersection of the Coralville Strip and Hayden Fry Way and struck another vehicle. The incident was captured on video via video. The driver of the vehicle that was hit suffered an unspecified injury.
Responding police say Hill showed signs of intoxication, handed them a medical insurance card instead of a vehicle insurance card, and refused breath testing. A blood warrant was signed by a judge, and a sample from Hill was sent to the Department of Criminal Investigations lab for testing.
Hill is charged with Operating While Intoxicated – 3rd or Subsequent Offense. If convicted, he faces a maximum of five years in prison. He has previous OWI convictions from Johnson County in 2018 and 2023.
