An Iowa City man accused of using a baseball bat during an assault last February has reached a plea deal.
20-year-old Leshawn Garrett entered a guilty plea on Friday. Terms of the deal are not listed.
Iowa City Police say Garrett and 20-year-old Willie Garrett, who live together on Muscatine Avenue, met another person at Mercer Park at about 6:00 on the night of February 22nd. Willie Garrett was reportedly armed with a replica Glock 17 BB gun, while Leshawn Garrett allegedly hit the person with a baseball bat. The incident was captured on video. Iowa City Police say Willie Garrett admitted to brandishing the replica gun to scare the other person. He was given a deferred judgment on an Assault While Displaying a Weapon charge.
On Friday, Judge Brandon Schrock set Leshawn Garrett’s sentencing for March 5th. Leshawn Garrett is also accused of violating his probation on charges stemming from a July 2023 incident that saw him reportedly threatening people with a knife during a pair of robbery attempts on the Ped Mall. A probation revocation hearing in that case is set for January 29th.
